Mariposa

Here goes my first "official" post to the food blog! It only took five months...

Anyhow. A few months ago (yes, this it's been quite a while since I'd visited the restaurant hence why some of the details might be a bit fuzzy). Mariposa, being one of those department-store type restaurants, it does not keep what I would consider "normal" restaurant hours (open until 9pm?) and instead closes around the time when I get off of work. When I went, it was a Saturday afternoon. I had no idea what to expect since I couldn't find anything online resembling a menu or a review (not for the Fashion Island location anyway).

Mariposa is located on the third floor of Neiman Marcus. The bar and hostess table is visible from the department store floor but the restaurant itself is tucked away from view down a short corridor.

There was no wait and we were seated next to the large windows which provided a fantastic view of nothing memorable which means we probably weren't facing the ocean. The decor was nice, though. Bright, airy and modern.

The first thing they did was present us with a small cup of what appeared to be chicken broth with a little biscuit-type thing accompanying it. An amuse bouche perhaps? It was good, but it's hard to truly screw up chicken broth.

The next item they presented us with was a large popover with a small dish of strawberry butter. Delicious. The strawberry butter tasted a lot like butter mixed with strawberry jam which I suppose saves us the trouble of having to spread two condiments onto our bread. Whatever the reasoning, I liked it.

Now here is where things get fuzzy...

I ordered some kind of fish dish. April ordered some kind of pasta. I can't remember what they were called. I can't remember how much they cost. (I think both were in the $20ish range). I do remember that the fish was a bit dry, the bed of orange something that the fish was sitting on was quite sweet, the leafy part of the bok choy was tasty and the round fried thing is a breaded onigiri ball (yum!). I also remember that April really enjoyed her entree.

So much for a first review. This one kind of sucked.

Dress Code: This is kind of a nice, upscale casual restaurant. I'd definitely feel underdressed if I was in shorts and a t-shirt, but I'm sure they wouldn't turn you away.

Price: It's a bit expensive for lunch...entrees range from high 'teens to low thirties, if I remember correctly. I think my entree was in the low-mid twenties?
